Survival skills ????In the early 1990s, Arne Sorenson so impressed Bill Marriott as he navigated spinning off Host Hotels and creating Marriott International that Bill hired the young litigator. Today, as the third CEO in Marriott's 85 years -- and the first non-family member -- Sorenson spends half his time checking in to and out of Marriott's 3,700 properties in 73 countries and territories. He finds insight in the unexpected, as when he was stuck in the middle seat on a recent flight. "If I were an airline CEO, I'd have my best thinkers solve bringing comfort back," he says. Some other lessons from his mobile life: Ditch the laptop ????I travel with just an iPad, an iPod, and my Black- Berry. It's all I need, and it leaves room for the hard copies of reports I carry. I like to refer to a number of pages at one time, which is difficult on a computer. Same with reading; I still prefer physical books. Order ahead ????Travel apps like GateGuru and Urbanspoon make life on the road so much easier. With mobile devices, I think we'll soon be able to order room service from our smartphones so that a meal can be delivered minutes after we check in. Let in some light ????The first thing I do in my hotel room is open all the curtains -- brighten up the place and look at the view. I once stayed in one of our presidential suites in Asia right after Obama, and my kids asked if he left anything behind, like dirty socks. He left nothing. Rules to tip by ????If I stay somewhere for a night or two, I think five bucks is a nice tip for housekeeping. If a family is all staying in one room for more than a few days, consider tipping more. I usually tip at the end of my stay and leave the money on the nightstand. Getting upgrades ????The secret to getting an upgrade is really no secret at all: Concentrate your travel with as few providers as possible. You'll be that much more important to them, and they will care more about you. There is no secret password you can use. |
